For three weeks in August, the city of Edinburgh welcomes an explosion of creative energy from around the globe.
Artists and performers take to hundreds of stages all over the city to present shows for every taste. From big names in the world of entertainment to unknown artists looking to build their careers, the festival caters for everyone and includes theatre, comedy, dance, physical theatre, circus, cabaret, children’s shows, musicals, opera, music, spoken word, exhibitions and events. Audiences can create their own festival experience from a mixture of ticketed, free and street performances.
The Fringe will take place from 05 – 29 August 2022, the 75th anniversary of the festival.
Its origins can be traced back to 1947, when eight theatre groups arrived uninvited to perform at the Edinburgh International Festival. This festival, established after the Second World War to celebrate and enhance European cultural life, aimed to revitalize the arts scene. Undeterred by not being part of the official program, these performers chose to showcase their shows on the periphery of the International Festival, coining the term and name “Edinburgh Festival Fringe.” Throughout the years, this spontaneous artistic movement has attracted millions of individuals who come to create and experience art across diverse genres.
